Sociology

The department of sociology of Nasra college of Arts and science was established in the academic year 2019-20 as affiliated to the University of Calicut with Mr. Jamsheed as the head of the department, after considering the increasing demand for the course from the higher education aspirants. It offers undergraduate programmes in sociology with Indian politics and journalism. The department has a consistent record of academic excellence by achieving very good result in the examinations

The faculty members are committed to contributing to the department, college and the university along with their regular engagement in classroom teaching.We envisions excellence in teaching, research, service and support activities for the greater understanding and resolution of societal problems and to promote an intellectually rich and culturally diverse academic community of faculty and students.

Course Description

The theory papers cover the thrust areas of sociology like gender, research, environmental sustainability, life skills, Indian sociology, Kerala sociology, health and illness, mass media, anthropology, population and society, and sociology of development. The discovery and dissemination of new knowledge are central to the mission of the department of sociology. Through its focus on teaching and learning research and discovery, and outreach and engagement, the department creates, conveys, and applies knowledge to expand personal growth and opportunity, advance social and community development, foster social responsibity and improve the quality of life. We envision excellence in teaching, research, service, and support activities for the greater understanding and resolution of societal problems, and to promote an intellectually rich and culturally diverse academic community of faculty and students.

About The Programme

The Department of Sociology was established in 2019. It offers a core UG Program in Sociology with politics and journalism as complimentary courses. Its core sociology program relies on its disciplinary trajectory of theory and practice, covering classical and contemporary sociological theories, research methods in sociology, and sociology of India and Kerala society. This disciplinary trajectory is constantly re-oriented in order to face and comprehend the new changes and challenges posed by the ever-changing socio-cultural environments and their order. Accordingly, the courses offered in the program cover topics on gender, class and caste; questions of population, environmental changes and development; health and illness; media studies; and social anthropology of marginal communities.
